I recently inspected a home for some Owners who were planning to do some remodeling. They wanted the inspection to see if there was anything wrong with their house that should be taken care of prior to the remodeling. When I got there the husband showed me a crack in the living room above the fireplace. There were also signs of movement in the corners of the living room. A walkway that crossed over the living room and entry hallway had dropped about three eights of an inch where it connected to the upstairs bedroom wall. Two of the doors in the bedroom near the walkway had moved so they did not close correctly. I next went under the house into the crawlspace. There I saw where two of the support columns had moved. One had moved enough that the beam supporting the floor had moved on the column.
